  2. Nifedipine (Procardia) Actions
    • 1. Relaxes smooth muscle causing arteriolar vasodilation
    • 2. Decreases peripheral vascular resistance
    • 3. Inhibits influx of calcium into the myocardium and smooth muscle and thereby inhibits the contractile process
    • 4. Decreases myocardial workload
  3. Nifedipine (Procardia) Indications
    • 1. Severe hypertension
    • 2. Angina
  4. Nifedipine (Procardia) Contraindications
    • 1. Allergy
    • 2. Hypotension
    • 3. Patient's recieving IV beta blockers
  5. Nifedipine (Procardia) Precautions
    • 1. Monitor BP for hypotension
    • 2. May worsen CHF
    • 3. May rapidly reduce ICP. Do not use in PT w/ signs of CVA
    • 4. rapid drops in BP = rapid drops in myocardial perfusion for AMI patient.

    • 1. dizziness
    • 2. flushing
    • 3. nausea
    • 4. headache
    • 5. weakness
    • 6. hypotension

    10mg SL (puncture capsule and squeeze under the tounge)

    Gel capsules: 10mg or 20mg
