Nifedipine (Procardia) Actions
1. Relaxes smooth muscle causing arteriolar vasodilation
2. Decreases peripheral vascular resistance
3. Inhibits influx of calcium into the myocardium and smooth muscle and thereby inhibits the contractile process
4. Decreases myocardial workload

1. Severe hypertension
2. Angina
Nifedipine (Procardia) Contraindications
1. Allergy
2. Hypotension
3. Patient's recieving IV beta blockers
Nifedipine (Procardia) Precautions
1. Monitor BP for hypotension
2. May worsen CHF
3. May rapidly reduce ICP. Do not use in PT w/ signs of CVA
4. rapid drops in BP = rapid drops in myocardial perfusion for AMI patient.
Nifedipine (Procardia) Side Effects
1. dizziness
2. flushing
3. nausea
4. headache
5. weakness
6. hypotension

10mg SL (puncture capsule and squeeze under the tounge)
