Drug Protocols

  1. Presentation of Glucose 10%
    10% Glucose in 500ml soft pack (50g)
  2. Indications of Glucose 10%
    Symptomatic hypoglycaemia with inability to self administer oral glucose
  3. Contra-Indications of Glucose 10%
    Nil
  4. Precautions of Glucose 10%
    • May cause tissue and vascular necrosis if not flushed properly or if it leaks into tissue
    • Pt's suspected of CVA
  5. Side effects of Glucose 10%
    Nil
  6. Dosage of Glucose 10% - Adult
    150ml bolus IV as initial dose then retake Pt's BSL, if less than 4 mmol/L give a further bolus of 100ml. Continue assessing Pt's BSL, titrating glucose in 100ml boluses until BSL greater than 4 mmol/L
  7. Dosage of Glucose 10% - Child
    • 2.5ml/kg IV as initial dose then retake Pt's BSL, if less than 4
    • mmol/L give a further bolus of 1ml/kg. Continue assessing Pt's BSL,
    • titrating glucose in 1m/kgl boluses until BSL greater than 4 mmol/L
