Organic Chemistry Chapter 15: Radical Reactions

  1. Halogenation of alkanes
    • C-H + X2 --(hv or Δ)--> C-X + H-X
    • X = Cl or Br
    • follow radical chain reaction
    • bromination very selective
  2. Allylic halogenation
    • CH2=CH-CH3 --(NBS & ROOR)--> CH2=CHCH2Br
    • radical chain reaction
    • adds Br to allylic carbons
  3. Radical addition of HBr to an alkene
    • RCH=CH2 --(HBr & |hv or heat or ROOR)--> alkyl bromide
    • Radical addition mechanism
    • Br bonds to less substituted carbon to form more stable radical
