Glucagon

Hyperglycemic Agent (Pancreatic Hormone)

• -Elevates blood glucose by converting liver glycogen into free glucose molecules
• -Relaxes smooth muscle of the respiratory tract
• -Increases inotropic and chronotropic effect of myocardium

ALOC when hypoglycemia is suspected and IV access cannot be established

Not significant if above indications

• Cardio
• Hypertension
• Angina
• Tachycardia

• Neuro
• Dizziness

• GI
• Nausea
• Vomiting

• 1mg IM.
• May rpt every 20 mins (2x)

Not used in prehospital setting.

• Onset
• 5-10 mins

• Duration
• 1-2 hrs

Place pt in lt lateral position, monitor airway at all times and have suction readily available.

Vomiting may occur & cause aspiration in unconscious  pts.

Only effective if liver glycogen is available and may be ineffective in chronic hypoglycemia, starvation, or renal insufficiency.

Pts w/CAD or heart disease may increase risk of AMI
