Westminster Shorter Catechism Questions 1-19 with some proof scriptures

Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

The word of God, which is contained in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for corection, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16

The scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.2 Timothy 1:13

God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth. John 4:24

There is but One only, the living and true God.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD. Deuteronomy 6:4

There are three persons in the Godhead; the Father, the Son; and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 1 John 5:7

The decrees of God are, his eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, whereby, for his own glory, he hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.

In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: Ephesians 1:11

God executeth his decrees in the works of creation and providence.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.Gen 1:1

The work of creation is, God's making all things of nothing, by the word of his power, in the space of six days, and all very good.

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God: so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Hebrews 11:3

God created man male and female, after his own image, in knowledge, righteouness, and holiness, with dominion over the creatures.

• And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the
• image of him that created him. Colossians 3:10

God's works of providence are, his most holy, wise, and powerful preserving and governing all his creatures, and all their actions.

The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. Psalm 103:19

When God created man, he entered into a covenant of life with him, upon condition of perfect obedience; forbidding him to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, upon the pain of death.

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:17

Our first parents, being left to the freedom of their own will, fell from the estate wherein they were created, by sinning against God.

Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions Ecclesiastes 7:29

Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God.

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4

The sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created, was their eating the forbidden fruit.

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Genesis 3:6

The covenant being made with Adam, not only for himself, but for his posterity; all mankind, descending from him by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him, in his first transgression.

Therefore as by the offence of one judgement came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. Romans 5:18

The fall brought mankind into an estate of sin and misery.

Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sined: Romans 5:12

The sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell, consists in the guilt of Adam;s first sin, the want of original righteouness, and the corruption of his whole nature, which is commonly called Original Sin; together with all actual transgressions which proceed from it.

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: Matthew 15:19

All mankind by their fall lost communion with God, are under his wrath and curse, and so made liable to all miseries in this life, to death itself, and to the pains of hell for ever.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
