Flumazenil (Romazicon)

Benzodiazepine receptor antagonist

Antagonizes the actions of benzodiazepines on the CNS.

Reversal of respiratory depression and sedative effects from pure benzodiazepine overdose.

hypersensitivity, tricyclic antidepressant overdose, seizure-prone pts., coma of unknown etiology.

Nausea, vomiting, agitation, injection site pain, visual disturbances, seizures, cutaneous vasodilation.

Toxic effects of mixed-drug overdose (especially tricyclics).

5 and 10 mL vials (0.1mg/mL).

• Adult: First dose: 0.2mg IV/IO over 15 seconds.
• second dose: 0.3mg IV/IO over 30 seconds. if no reponse, give third dose.
• third dose: 0.5mg IV/IO over 30 seconds. if no reponse, repeat once every minute until adequate reponse or a total of 3mg is given.
• Pediatric: Not recommended.

• Onset: 1-2 minutes.
• Peak effect and duration related to plasma concentration of benzodiazepines.

Pregnancy safety: Category C. Be prepared to manage seizures in Pts. wha are physically dependent on benzodiazepines or who have ingested large doses of other drugs. Romazicon may precipitate withdrawal syndromes in pts. dependent on benzodiazepines. Monitor Pts. for re-sedation and repiratory depression. Be prepared to assist ventilations.
