  1. What does ATP stand for?
    Adenosine Triphosphate
  2. What is ATP used as?
    An immediate source of energy in cells for biological processes
  3. How does ATP release energy?
    It is hydrolysed removing the final phosphate molecule and releasing a small, manageable amount of energy
  4. What are the products of ATP hydrolysis?
    Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate (pi)
  5. How is ATP produced?
    Using the energy from glucose hydrolysis (respiration) or the sun (photosynthesis)
  6. State three reasons why ATP is used as an energy source rather than glucose
    • Energy can be released immediately in a single hydrolysis reaction
    • ATP can be quickly reformed from ADP and Pi in a single condensation reaction¬†
    • Small amounts of energy are released from each hydrolysis reaction
  7. State 4 uses for the energy released from ATP
    • Muscle contraction
    • Active transport (to change the shape of the carrier proteins)
    • Protein synthesis¬†
    • Activation of molecules, by adding a phosphate group, the energy level is increased making it more reactive
