AP TEST2

  1. The relationships between the respiratory and circulatory systems are critical to the human body. After viewing from the previous slides how the systems function independently, I will now cover how both function together.
All cells, tissues, and organs need oxygen to live. Without oxygen, the body cannot function correctly. Symptoms such as memory loss, decreased motor function, and poor judgment (or hypoxia to summarize) are all related to the lack of oxygen. But how does the oxygen inhaled from lungs reach the needs to the rest of the body. This can be accomplished by using the circulatory system.
  2. A simple way of explaining the complex process would be, the lungs oxygenate the blood; the oxygenated blood then travels through the arteries; once the oxygenated blood reaches its destination at the capillaries, the oxygen is then delivered. The successful delivery of oxygen will restore the body to function normally.
Another way the circulatory and respiratory system work together is by eliminating the body’s waste of carbon dioxide. All cells, tissues, and organs that use oxygen, will generate carbon dioxide waste. With elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the human body, the body cannot function properly. Symptoms such as shortness of breath, confusion, and headaches (or hypercapnia to summarize) are all related to the excessive levels of carbon dioxide.
  3. . How can the body eliminate the carbon dioxide waste; by using the assistance of the respiratory system. The carbon dioxide waste is exchanged in the capillaries and travels to through the veins of the circulatory system; once the carbon dioxide waste in the blood reached the heart, it is pumped to the lungs and exhaled out of the body. The successful elimination of carbon dioxide will restore the body to function normally.
