  1. Why do we need protein?
    To supply AA to build things
  2. What is unque about proteins as a nutrient?
    Contain Nitrogemn
  3. Because of BSE what restriction do we have on animal protein
    No feeding ruminant protein to ruminants
  4. Why dont we want to use protein as eneergy? Is it possible?
    Yes it is possible but it is the most expensive form in terms of $
  5. What are the main protein sources in monogastrics? Contrast this to ruminants
    • Oilseed meals such as soy abd canola as well as legumes such as peas and lentils or animal by products
    • In ruminants it can be any of the above but is often in the form of good hay and urea supplementation
  6. Do ruminants often care of the quality of the protein source?
    Not in the same way that monos do, because the bacteria just break everything down to ammonia anyways it doesnt really matter cause it is the bacterial protein that ends up digested anyways
  7. How are cereal grains in terms of protein? What does this mean for diet formulation?
    • Low and poorly balanced
    • Need to be supplemented with another ingredient better in AA
  8. Proteins are polymer ofs?
    Amino acids
  9. What bond holds Proteins together?
    Peptide bond
  10. What can make proteins difficult to digest?
    Tertiary structure can be very folded and therefore difficult for digestive enzymes to break down
  11. Why do we need so many enzymes to break down a protein?
    Need to be able to break down all different types of peptide bonds
  12. What are the 2 main factors affecting protein qualioty?
    • AA balance
    • Digestibility
  13. What are 5 factors that affect protein digestibility
    • Fiber (coats it)
    • Type of protein
    • AA balance
    • Heat treatment
    • Anti nutritional factors
  14. Too much heating of proteins and what will happen?
    Maillard reaction products (carb binds it very tightly, un utilizable)
  15. What are the 10 essential amino acids?
    • Arginine
    • Histidine
    • Isoleucine
    • Leucine
    • Lysine

    • Phenylalanine
    • Threonine
    • Tryptophan

    No the bacteria make everything for them

    Stomach and small intestine

    • Pepsin and HCL
    • Shorten the protein
  24. What is the main protein digesters in the smll intestine? They do what primarily
    • Chymotrypsin
    • Trypsin
    • Carboxypeptidase
    • Break down to dipeptides and single AA
  25. What do we do when we feel the bacteria are not letting the ruminant have enough protein?
    We use bypass protein
