  1. Punishment has 2 purposes:
    • the deserved infliction of suffering onto wrong doer
    • the prevention of crime
  2. Specific deterrence
    discourage ofndr from recidivating
  3. General Deterrance
    sentence severe enough to stop ppl from committing similar crime
  4. Selective Incapacitation
    removal or restriction of the freedom of ofndrs=longer prison sentances
  5. Restoration
    repairing harm that's been done on victim & community
  6. Parsimony
    auth must be able to justify the sentences handed out
  7. Control
    over those who have power by virtue of their pstn in CJS
