-
In the stress vs strain chart, what is the difference between ductile and brittle material?
Ductile material has a plastic region, brittle material does not
-
In the stress vs strain chart, what is the difference between ductile and really ductile material?
Really ductile material will see a stress plateau after reaching yield stress, ductile material will not
-
Describe the tensile failure of brittle vs ductile material.
Brittle material will have a relatively smooth fracture surface, ductile material will have a rough fracture surface (or cup and core)
-
Describe the torsional failure of brittle vs ductile material.
- Brittle material will just snap diagonally, no plastic deformation
- Ductile material will show torsional lines
-
What are the steps in sand casting?
- 1. Pattern making
- 2. Molding
- 3. Melting and pouring
- 4. Cleaning
-
What are the steps in investment casting?
- 1. Pour wax over the material you want to produce.
- 2. Slurry is sprayed over wax pattern.
- 3. Take out wax
- 4. Now you have a mold
-
What are the steps in permanent mold casting?
Just like sand casting, but with a steel mold.
-
What is die casting?
Using a steel mold, melted metal is pushed into the mold at high pressures.
-
What is powdered metallurgy?
A fine powder is mixed with binders and additives. It has a high accuracy since it reduces thermal shrinking.
-
What is plastic injection molding?
- 1. Pellets are transported by screw into melting zone
- 2. RAM injects material into mold
-
What is the polymer extrusion process?
Like plastic injection molding, but instead of a mold it just goes through
