What hormones alter carbohydrate metabolism?

Estrogen, Prolactin
Gestational DM does not become diagnosed in the first trimester

Maybe second or third trimester
Gestational DM mothers may be at risk for developing DM later in life

Or it becomes unresolved
Why does Gestational DM resolve after pregnancy (in non-breastfeeding mothers)

Once the placenta is expelled, then there is less production of Estrogen and Progesterone as well as hPL, Prolactin, and Cortisol
How soon will GDM resolve (in non-breastfeeding mothers)

7-10 days
Breastfeeding women may still be at risk for GDM because of the amount of Prolactin they produce

So they will need to be monitored to determine a plan of care

Macrosomia in a previous pregnancy

A woman may progress into HELLP
