Who usually gets an appendicitis?

kids btwn 11-19
What causes and appendicitis?
- obstruction of the lument by accumulated feces
- foreign bodies
- tumor
- thickening of lymphoid tissue
Clinical manifestations of appendicitis
- periumbilical LRQ pain
- anorexia
- n/v
- rebound tenderness
- muscle guarding
Complications of appendicitis
- perforation
- peritonitis
- abscesses
What causes peritonitis?

rupture of organs containing chemical irritants or bacteria released in to the peritoneal cavity
Examples of conditions that cause peritonitis
- ruptured appendix
- perforated gastric/duodenal ulcer
- inflamed gallbladder
- abdominal trauma (GSW/Knife wound)
Diseases that cause peritonitis
- pancreatitis
- ascites
- peritoneal dialysis
S/S of peritonitis
- abdominal pain
- abdominal distention and guarding
- nausea/vomiting
- fever
- tachycardia/tachypnea
If a person has an appendicitis...why aren't laxatives and enemas used?

cuz increases peristalsis and can cause perforation of the appendix
When do you advance a persons diet after surgery or they have been NPO?

once bowel sounds are present
