    • obstruction of the lument by accumulated feces
    • foreign bodies
    • tumor
    • thickening of lymphoid tissue
  3. Clinical manifestations of appendicitis
    • periumbilical LRQ pain
    • anorexia
    • n/v
    • rebound tenderness
    • muscle guarding
  4. Complications of appendicitis
    • perforation
    • peritonitis
    • abscesses
  5. What causes peritonitis?
    rupture of organs containing chemical irritants or bacteria released in to the peritoneal cavity
  6. Examples of conditions that cause peritonitis
    • ruptured appendix
    • perforated gastric/duodenal ulcer
    • inflamed gallbladder
    • abdominal trauma (GSW/Knife wound)
  7. Diseases that cause peritonitis
    • pancreatitis
    • ascites
    • peritoneal dialysis
  8. S/S of peritonitis
    • abdominal pain
    • abdominal distention and guarding
    • nausea/vomiting
    • fever
    • tachycardia/tachypnea
  9. If a person has an appendicitis...why aren't laxatives and enemas used?
    cuz increases peristalsis and can cause perforation of the appendix
  10. When do you advance a persons diet after surgery or they have been NPO?
    once bowel sounds are present
