Antibiotics

  1. Lincosamide
    • Clindamysin
    • Lincomycin

    • Inhibits protein synthesis:
    • Binds to the 50s subunit; causes the pre-mature dissociation of the peptidyl-trna so that no new amino acids are added or joined together.
  2. Streptogramin
    Quinupristin/Dalfopristin (synercid)

    • Inhibits protein synthesis:
    • Binds to the 50s subunit of the bacterial ribosome.
  3. Dapsone
    Dapsone (diamino-diphenyl sulfone)

Inhibits folic acid (folate) synthesis in bacteria; folate antagonist.
  4. Isoniazid
    Isoniazid

Inhibits mycolic acid synthesis in acid-fast bacteria.
  5. Rifamycin
    • Fifampin
    • Fifabutin

    Inhibits bacterial Rna polymerase
  6. Oxazolidinoe
    Linezolid

    • Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis:
    • prevents the union of the 30s and 50s subunits to make a functional bacterial ribosome.
  7. 5-Nitroimidazole
    • Metronidazole (Flagyl)
    • Tinidazole

Inactivates cysteine-containing enzymes, thereby inhibiting microbial metabolism.
