JTAC has VISUAL contact with attacking A/C and TGT.
A/C has visually acquired Target or Mark.
TYPE 2
JTAC requires control of individual attack or any or all of the following conditions exist:
JTAC unable to visually acquire the A/C at weapons release

Clearance for multiple attacks within a single pass.
Type 2 / 3 Control
JTAC must acquire target visually or utilize: targeting data from Scout, COLT, FIST, JFO, UAS, SOF, CAS aircrew or other asset with REAL Time targeting information.
TACTICAL RISK ASSESSMENT
Level of acceptable risk
RISK Include:
Failure to achieve desired effects
Potential for Fratricide
Potential for Collateral Damage
What determines type of control used?
Conditions determine which type of control is used.
Who decides what control to use?
JTAC
The ____ situation will define the risk.
tactical
In most cases allow Aircrew to best match weapons carried against target
TRUE
TYPE 1 ADVANTAGES:
JTAC has most control over fratricide
Real Time Abort
Simpler Target Verfication
TYPE 1 DISADVANTAGES:
may limit useable munitions
JTAC must see target and A/C
TYPE 2 ADVANTAGE
permits use of standoff weapons and full range of aircraft sensors
allows full use of observation assets
TYPE 2 DISADVANTAGE
more difficult target verification
TYPE 3 ADVANTAGE
Least restrictive to CAS A/C
Multiple targets in an engagement area
TYPE 3 DISADVANTAGE
CAS A/C may be required to find their own target
Most difficult to quickly ascertain target validity and confirm BDA
JOINT FIRES OBSERVER
(JFO) support TYPE 2/3 CAS Terminal Attack Control and perform Terminal Guidance Operations.
JFO'S Joint Mission Task:
Engage targets with:
surface to surface fires
naval surface fires
air to ground fires
Terminal Guidance Operations
JFO assist the JTAC's by:
Passing Situation updates / 9 line briefs
providing targeting data
marking targets for CAS
providing corrections of impacts / BDA
JFO's cannot provide terminal attack control clearance.
TRUE
