  1. Skin and mucous membranes (epithelial cells)
    Mechanical and Chemical defenses
  2. Phagocytic cells (neutrophils, macrophages)
    Ingest and kill bacteria and fungi
  3. Proinflammatory cells (macrophages, mast cells, eosinophils, basophils and platelets)
    Induce host defenses and inflammation.
  4. Natural killer cells
    Kill virus-infected cells and tumor cells
  5. Antigen-presenting cells (dendritic cells, macrophages)
    • Recognize, process, and present antigens to lymphocytes.
    • Initiate adaptive immune responses.
