• due to the commercialization of popular music since 1900 has created an almost complete separation of the two styles  that american pop music  has become its own category

• as impressionism rose in the arts musicians started to join in the crusade of anti romanticism
• Claude debussy was considered the chef in impressionism in the music but he did not like the term and did not associate himself with the movement.debussy broke fro traditional harmony and melody using short melodic figures.

• a group of french artist who were against emotionalism and realism started a new radical way of painting in the 1860

• using all of the tonalites  but has been labeled atonality by music historians because of the lack of discernible center of tonality in the works
• the system developed by schoenberg to create atonality all notes must be used before a note can be repeated a note can be repeated thereby no single note has more importance than any other note.
