  1. Electricity
    A form of energy that results from the interaction of charged particles

  2. Static charge (static electricity)

    An electric charge that tends to stay on the surface of an object, rather than flowing away quickly


  3. Charging by friction
    A process in which objects made from different materials rub against each other, producing a net static charge on each object


  4. Electrostatic series
    A list that ranks the objects ability to take negative charges.
  5. Insulator
    A material in which electrons can't move easily from one atom to the other

    e.g. plastic, wood, rubber

  6. Conductor
    A material in which electrons can move easily between atoms

    e.g. copper, aluminum, water

  7. Semiconductor
    A material in which electrons can move fairly well between atoms

    e.g. silicon

  8. Ground
    An object that can supply a very large number of electrons to, or can remove a very large number of electrons from, a charged object, thus neutralizing that object

  9. Electroscope
    • an instrument for detecting and measuring electricity

  10. Charging by contact
  11. When a charged object touches another object.

  12. Laws of electric charges
    opposites attract, like charges repel, neutral attracts

  13. Electric field
    a region around a charged particle or object within which a force would be exerted on other charged particles or objects.


  14. Induced charge separation
    the movement of electrons in a substance, caused by the electric field of a nearby charged object without direct contact between the substance and the object.


  15. Ion
    an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.

  16. Lightning rod
    a metal rod or wire fixed to an exposed part of a building or other tall structure to divert lightning harmlessly into the ground.



  17. Electrostatic precipitator
    a device that removes suspended dust particles from a gas or exhaust by applying a high-voltage electrostatic charge and collecting the particles on charged plates.

  18. Van de Graaff generator
    a machine devised to produce a high voltage by means of an endless belt collecting electrostatic charge from a source and transferring it to a large isolated metal dome, on which a large charge accumulates.
  19. Radiation dosimeter
    Dosimeters measure an individual's or an object's exposure to radiated energy
