Hydroxyzine (Atarax, Vistaril)

    Antihistamine, antiemetic, antianxiety agent.
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Potentiates effects of analgesics; calming effect without impairing mental alertness.
  4. Indications
    To potentiate the effects of analgesics; to control nausea and vomiting, anxiety reactions, and motion sickness; preoperative and postoperative sedation.
  5. Contraindications
    Hypersensitivity
  6. Adverse Reactions
    Dry mouth and drowsiness.
  7. Drug Interactions
    Potentiates the effects of CNS depressants such as narcotics, barbiturates, and alcohol.
  8. How supplied
    25 mg/mL or 50 mg/mL in 1-mL vials.
  9. Dosage and Administration
    • Adult: 25-100 mg IM.
    • Pediatric: 0.5 -1.0 mg/kg/dose IM.
  10. Duration of Action
    • Onset: IM: 15-30 minutes.
    • Peak Effect: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
    • Duration: 4-6 hours.
  11. Special considerations
    Should be given by IM injection only. Localized burning at injection site is common complaint.
