Action-Reaction Pair
A pair of simultaneous equal but opposite forces resulting from the interaction of two objects
Coefficient of Friction
the ratio of the force of friction to the normal force acting between two objects
Contact Force
force that arises from the physical contact of two objects
Equilibrium
the state in which there is no change in a body's motion
Field Force
forces that can exists between objects, even in the absence of physical contact between the objects
Force
the cause of an acceleration or the change in an objects velocity
Force Diagram
a diagram of the objects invovled in a situation and the forces exerted on the objects
Inertia
the tendency of an object to maintain its state of motion
Kinetic Friciton
the restive force that opposes the relative motion of two contacting surfaces that are moving
Net External Force
the total force resulting from a combination of external forces on an object; sometimes called the resultant force
Normal Force
a force exerted by one object on another in a direction perpendicular to the surface of contact
Static Friction
the resistive force that opposes the relative motion of two contacting surfaces that are at rest with respect to one another
Weight
the magnitude of the force of gravity acting on an object
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Weight, unlike mass, is not an permanent property of an object. Weight is dependent on force of gravity.
If an object is at rest, can we conclude that no external forces are acting on on it? Explain
Newtons First Law
an object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion unless the object experiences a net external force
Newtons second law
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net external force acting on the object and inversely proportional to the object's mass
Newtons Third Law
For ever action there is an equal and opposite reaction
