  1. What is Technical Services?
    The area of the library most patrons never see. Responsible for ordering books and journals, also responsible for the online material such as the online card catalog.
  2. What is Public Services?
    The area of the library that deals directly with the patrons. These include the Information Desk (also known as Reference Desk) where you can get answers to your questions. Also the Circulation Desk where you check out items.
  3. What does ILL stand for?
    Interlibrary loan.
  4. What are the 4 major formats of information found in a library?
    • Print: Paper - Books, magazines, newspapers, pamplets
    • Electronic: Computer - CD's, Internet
    • Audiovisual: Machines that play back - Slides, films, audiocassettes or cd's, VCR tapes, DVD's or CD's
    • Microform: Machines that enlarge - Microfilm, Microfiche

    Holdings

    Reference Collection

    The items that can be checked out of the library. These include fiction books, nonfiction books, audio books and DVD's and other audiovisual items

    The Periodical Collection
  10. Can the Periodical Collection be checked out?
    No, but you can make copies of an article if you need it.
  11. What is the difference between Microfilm and Microfiche?
    Microfilm is rolls of film. Microfiche are sheets of film
  12. What does OPAC stand for?
    Online Public Access Catalog
  13. How many cards are filed for each item or book?
    One for the author's last name, one for the title, one or more for the general subject. There could also be cards for co-author, editor and illustrator
  14. What information is found on each card?
    Title, author's name, subject, item's location and call number
  15. Before you begin searching a database, what things should you do?
    Look up subject in Encyclopedia then:

    • 1. Write down words from you subject. As a phrase, sentence or question
    • 2. Identify keywords and concepts and make a list of them
    • 3. Include any synonyms or different forms of the word, including plurals or variations in spelling.
    • 4. Make list of keywords to exclude
