List the three parts of the Cell Theory.
1. Cells are the basic units of structure and function of all living things.
2. All living things are composed of cells.
3. Cells come from cells.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane is a gate keeper. It controls what substances can enter and leave the cell.
What is the nucleus?
The nucleus is the control center of the cell.
What is the mitochondria?
The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. It converts energy from food into energy a cell can use.
How is a bacterial cell different than a plant or animal cell?
A bacterial cell does not have a nucleus. The only organelle it has in common with a plant and animal cell is the ribosome.
What element do all organic compounds contain?
Carbon
Why is water important for a cell?
1. Most chemical reactions in cells require water.
2. Keeps cell's shape and size
3. Maintains the cells temperature.
4. Carries substances into and out of the cell
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to a lower concentration.
What is osmosis?
A special type of diffusion that moves water molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
What is the term used to describe the cell membrane since it is "picky" about what enters?
selectively permeable
What is the process that refers to the movement of materials through a cell membrane without using the cell's energy?
passive transport
What is the process that refers to the movement of materials through a cell membrane when the cell's energy is required?
active transport
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are a special type of protein that speed up chemical reactions.
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler elements
What is a compound?
When two or more elements that combine chemically.
