Variable
A condition that exists in more than one state. (extemper stature, pH, exposure to sunlight)

- 1. Dependent - must be held constant in an experiment.
- 2. Independent - allowed to fluctuate, the independent variable is the subject of the experiment.

Control group
Portion of the experiment that does not receive a treatment, this shows a baseline for comparison w/ the portion of the group that does receive treatment.

Placebo
A sugar pill used in drug trials, anindividual in thtravail will not be aware if they are receiving the treatment or placebo to eliminate psychosomatic variables.

Placebo effect
Some test subjects will respond to a placebo because they are told it is an actual treatment, when it is not.

Scientific method
Is based on observation.

Double blind study
The experimenters do not know whether an individual subject is getting the treatment or a placebo until the study is complete; this eliminates experimenter bias as a variable.
