-
GHRH - growth hormone releasing hormone
- Hypothalamus -
- Target Organ: AP
- Causes AP to secrete GH
- Cause of secretion: Low blood levels of GH
- Inhibitor of secretion: GHIH
-
GHIH - growth hormone inhibiting hormone
- Hypothalamus -
- Target Organ: AP
- Inhibits AP from secreting GH
- Cause of secretion: negative feedback from GH
-
TRH - thyrotropin releasing hormone
- Hypothalamus -
- Target Organ: AP
- Causes AP to secrete TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone
-
CRH - corticotropin releasing hormone
- Hypothalamus -
- Target Organ: AP
- Causes AP to secrete ACTH - adrenocorticotropic hormone
- Cause of secretion: fever, hypoglycemia and other stressors.
-
GnRH - gonadotropin releasing hormone
- Hypothalamus -
- Target Organ: AP
- Causes AP to secrete FSH or LH - follicle stimulating hormone or leutinizing hormone
-
PIH - prolactin inhibiting hormone
- Hypothalamus -
- Target Organ: AP
- Inhibits AP from secreting PRL - prolactin
-
GH - growth hormone
- anterior pituitary -
- Target Organ: liver, muscle, bone, cartilage, other tissues
- Effect: anabolic hormone, stimulates somatic growth, mobilizes fats, spares glucose
- Cause of secretion: GHRH, hypoglycemia, high levels of amino acids, low levels of fatty acids, exercise
- Inhibitor: negative feedback by GH, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, obesity, decreased GHRH
-
TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone
- anterior pituitary -
- Target Organ: thyroid gland
- Effect: thyroid gland is stimulated to release thyroid hormone
- Cause of secretion: TRH
- Inhibitor: negative feedback by thyroid hormones on AP and hypothalamus and by GHIH
-
ACTH - adrenocorticotropic hormone
- anterior pituitary -
- Target Organ: adrenal cortex
- Effect: promotes release of glucocorticoids and androgen
- Cause of secretion: CRH
- Inhibitor: negative feedback by glucocorticoids
-
FSH - follicle stimulating hormone
- anterior pituitary -
- Target Organ: ovaries and testes
- Effects: Female: stimulates ovarian follicle maturation and estrogen production. Male: sperm production
- Cause of secretion: GnRH
- Inhibitor: negative feedback by inhibin and Female: estrogen Male: testosterone
-
LH - leutinizing hormone
- anterior pituitary -
- Target Organ: ovaries and testes
- Effects: Female: triggers ovulation and ovarian production of estrogen and progesterone. Male: testosterone
- Cause of secretion: GnRH
- Inhibitor: negative feedback by Female: estrogen and progesterone. Male: testosterone
-
PRL - prolactin
- anterior pituitary -
- Target Organ: breast secretory tissue
- Effects: promotes lactation
- Cause of secretion: decreased PIH, enhanced by estrogen, birth control pills and breast feeding
- Inhibitor: PIH
