  2. 1. Word Root
    • The core of a medical term
    • Contains fundamental meaning
    • Foundation for other words
    • Greek or Latin derivative
  3. 2. Combining Forms

    Word Root/vowel
    Gastro/o Nephr/o
    • Word root to which a vowel is added (o)
    • Vowel has no meaning
  4. Suffix

    tonsil/itis  tonsil/ectomy
    • Word Element placed at the END of a word or word root
    • Changes the meaning of the word
    • Indicates procedures, condition, disease, or part of speech
  5. Prefix

    Word element attached to the BEGINNING of a word or word root
    Changes the meaning of a word
    • Usually indicates:
    • number
    • time
    • position
    • direction
    • negation
  6. Rules for defining a medical word
    • 1-Define Suffix 1st
    • 2-Define 1st part of word (prefix, word root or combining form)
    • 3-Define middle part of word
  7. GASTROENTERITIS
    • itis- means inflamation
    • gastr/o means stomach
    • enter means intestine
