-
What are the primary functions of the Skin?
Protection, temperature control, sensation, synthesize vitamin D
-
What are the 4 layers of the skin?
Epidermis, Dermis, Subcutaneous (Superficial Fascia), and Deep Fascia
-
What type of epithelium is the Epidermis composed of?
Stratified Squamous keratinizing epithelium.
-
Describe the dermis:
A superficial avascular layer in the skin. It has a deeper basal (regenerating) layer over the pigmented (melanocyte) layer. It also has Langerhans cells that signal the immune system by detecting foreign particles.
-
Describe the dermis:
A dense layer of collagen and elastic fibers. Account for the strength and toughness of skin. Contains: hair follicles, arrector pili, sebacous glands, blood vessels and nerves. Nails, the mammary gland, and enamel are derivitives of the dermis.
-
Describe the superficial of subcutaneous layer:
Loose, fatty connective tissue. Adipose tissue. Padding. Suderiferous sweat glands. Blood nad Lymph Vessels. Helps control thermal regulation.
-
Describe the deep fascia layer:
Dense organized tissue that covers dep structures like muscles. Forms compartments to help maintain muscle alignment and prevent spread of infection. The compartments help increase pressure for venous return.
-
Given an example of a condition resulting from dysfunction in the deep fascia.
Shin splits. The anterior compartment is to tight causing pain and inrritation.
-
What is the funtion of the sweat gland?
Thermal regulation through water evaportation on the skin
-
What is the function of the sebaceous glands?
Associated with hair follicles, secrete oil to maintain the integrity of the skin
-
What is the function of hair follicles?
Hair grows from the follicles. They have arrector pili muscles to erect the hair in response to fright (autonomic) and touch (sensory)
-
What is the funciton of the afferent nerve endings?
Provide sensor innervation for touch, pain and temperature.
