What are cells?
The basic structural and functional units of all life
Average cell size is 0.1um
What does the cell theory propose?
All living things
consist of
one or more organised structures at are called
cells
All living things are composed of one or more cells, and that
new cells are produced from existing ones
Describe prokaryotic cells
Have little defined internal structure
No structure houses the DNA
Eg. Bacteria
Describe Eukaryotic cells
Complex internal structure
Contain organelles
Have a nucleus
Organelles are held in place by the cytoskeleton
eg. animals, fungi, protists, plants
What is the plasma membrane?
Present in
animals and plants
It is a
semi permeable
boundary that controls the internal environment of the cell
What is the Cell wall?
Present in all
except animal cells
Rigid protective structure outside of plasma membrane
Made from carbohydrates (
cellulose
)
What is the Cytoplasm?
The liquid where the organelles are foundĀ
Where cellular metabolism occurs
What are organelles?
Membrane bound structures
Describe the nucleus
Only found in eukaryotic cells
Houses the DNA and is the
control centre
of the cell. Determines metabolic activity
Covered by nuclear envelop (double layer membrane)
What is the mitochondrion?
Found in Eukaryotic cells
The site of
cellular respiration
, production of ATP (energy compound)
What are
ribosomes
?
Site for
protein synthesis
Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic
Attached to the Endoplasmic reticulum
What does the endoplasmic reticulum do?
Collects the protein synthesised by ribosomes for
transport
throughout the cell
What are lysosomes?
A sac within cells containing
digestive enzymes
Can cause death of cell
Responsible for destruction and digestion of unwanted material with the cell
What are chloroplasts responsible for?
In plant cells
Site of
photosynthesis
Contain chlorophyll (absorbs light)
