  1. Asia
    The Continent where the first people were claimed to have come from
  2. Artifact
    An object left behind by a civilization, like pottery, jewelry, or even bones.
  3. Archeologist
    Someone who learns about people from the things that they leave behind.
  4. Economy
    The system of buying and selling goods.
  5. Primary source
    Something made at the time of an event, like a diary, pottery, or another artifact.
  6. Secondary source
    A re-telling of an event that occurred, like a textbook or a teacher.
  7. Great Law of Peace
    Laws of the Iroquois that travel from words instead of actually just written down. Many laws show up in the United State's documents
  8. Columbian Exchange
    The exchange of living things from the America's to Eurasia
  9. Trade
    The main reason for Exploration. People wanted to find the best trade route to Asia
  10. Northwest Passage
    An imaginary waterway that the French and the Dutch thought went through America, into the Pacific Ocean, and leading to Asia.
  11. Spain
    The first Country to colonize in America
  12. Goals of the Spanish
    Gold, Glory, God
  13. Conquistadors
    A Spanish explorer who claimed land and destroyed native cultures
  14. Economy of French
    It was based on Fish and Fur
  15. Mercantilism
    The belief that money was power. Many countries colonized based on this belief
  16. Economy of Northern Colonies
    The Northern colonies depended on trading, fishing, whaling, and towns
  17. Economy of Middle Colonies
    It was based on both trade and commercial farming of grain
  18. Economy of Southern Colonies
    Commercial farming of indigo, rice, cotton and tobacco
  19. Mayflower Compact
    A self government in the northern colonies in which the men agree to make and obey laws
  20. Quakers
    They settled in the Middle Colonies. They were tolerant so these colonies became the most diverse.
  21. House of Burgesses
    1st elected assembly in North America
  22. Apprentice
    Someone who is learning a skill from a master craftsman
  23. Indentured Servant
    A person who exchanges a number of years of labor in exchange for passage to the "new" world
  24. Subsistence Farming
    Farming only enough for you and you family.
  25. Nomad
    A wanderer with no permanent home. They were in search of food.
  26. Indigenous
    Someone familiar or native to a region
  27. Middle Passage
    The brutal voyage from Africa to America where slaves traveled. Many died.
  28. Charter
    A document giving a colony permission to establish itself. It set down the rules for the colony
  29. Articles of Confederation
    The government of the United States that was very weak and gave States more power than the Federal Government.
  30. Boston Massacre
    This started as a riot as soldier's fired into a crowd and killed five people. Then, the colonists started using it as propaganda to make people think that England wanted to hurt
  31. Boston Tea Party
    A protest that destroyed millions of dollars worth of tea and raged the British Government.
  32. Boycott
    A common form of protest.You stop buying things in order to cause places to go out of business.
  33. Continental
    The name of the Colonial Army
  34. Debt
    To owe money. This was something that happened to great Britain after the French and Indian war.
  35. Declaration of Independence
    It was a letter to Great Britain that said that they wanted to be free.
  36. Democracy
    A government where people have the right to vote and make decisions
  37. French and Indian War
    The war began over land disputes between France and Great Britain. It is also known as the Seven Years War.
  38. Gage
    The leader of the British army
  39. Great Britain
    They won the French and Indian War, but went in major debt afterward.
  40. Intolerable Acts
    The punishment for the Boston Tea Party. It was considered "Intolerable" because it isolated Boston from the rest of the colonies.
  41. Lexington and Concord
    The first battles of the Revolutionary War.
  42. Mississippi River
    The border for the new United States
  43. Northwest Ordinance
    This decided how new states could join the Union.
  44. No Taxation without Representation
    A complaint from the colonists because they weren't represnted in Parliament.
  45. Parliament
    The Government body in England that made the laws.
  46. Proclamation of 1763
    The line that many people didn't follow that said that you couldn't go past the Appalachian Mountains.
  47. Propaganda
    To try and influence an audience.
  48. Redcoats
    A nickname for the British army because they always wore red
  49. Saratoga
    The turning point in the Revolutionary War because France and other countries joined.
  50. Sons of Liberty
    This group organized protests against taxes in New England
  51. Stamp Act
    The first major tax on all papers in order to pay off the debt of the French and Indian War.
  52. Tea Act
    A low tax on tea that required colonists to buy tea from the East India Tea Company.
  53. Washington
    The commander of the Continental Army who eventually became the first president.
  54. Bill
    An idea for a law that is not yeat a law.
  55. Bill of Rights
    A list of rights that can't be taken away.
  56. Cabinet
    The president's advisors
  57. Checks and Balances
    The idea that the branches of government need to check on each other so that not one branch is stronger than the other.
  58. Commerce
    Trade
  59. Congress
    The House of Representatives and the Senate put together.
  60. Constitution
    The written plan of government
  61. Convention
    A formal meeting
  62. Nullify
    Cancel
  63. Executive
    This branch carries out the laws
  64. Federalism
    The sharing of powers betweenState and Federal Government
  65. First amendment
    Freedom of Speech, Religion, Press, Petition, and Assembly
  66. House of Representatives
    The group of people in Congress that;s number will always equal 435, and the number per state depends on population
  67. Judicial
    The branch of government that reviews the laws.
  68. Legislative
    The group made of Congress that makes the laws
  69. Loyalist
    Someone who stayed loyal to Great Britain.
  70. Negotiate
    To work out terms and agreements
  71. Patriotism
    Love and loyalty to your country.

    An introduction
  73. Ratify
    To approve
  74. Repeal
    To cancel
  75. Revenue
    Income
  76. Senate
    The part of Congress that has 2 member's per state
  77. Separation of Powers
    Dividing powers between the branches of Government
  78. Unconstitutional
    Something that goes against the beliefs of the Constitution
  79. Veto
    To cancel a bill before it becomes a law
  80. Cherokee
    The Native Americans who sued Georgia and had to leave because of the Indian Removal Act.
  81. Erie Canal
    Connected West and East New York to help increse trade
  82. Foreign Policy
    Rules that countries follow with different countries
  83. Indian Removal Act
    Law that Jackson made that said Native Americans had to move west of the Mississippi.
  84. Lewis and Clark
    They explored the Louisiana Purchase
  85. Louisiana Purchase
    Land recieved from France that Thomas Jefferson bought and doubled the size of the United States.
  86. Manifest Destiny
    The belief that America will expand from coast to coast
  87. Monroe Doctrine
    This stated that the United States would protect the Western Hemisphere and prevent other countries from trying to colonize.
  88. Neutrality
    To not take sides in a situation

    Examples for others to follow
  90. Protective tariff
    A tax on imports that encouraged Americans to buy from inside the country.
  91. Reservations
    Poor land that was set aside for Native Americans
  92. Texas
    A territory of Mexico which declared independence and was annexed to the US causing the Mexican War
  93. Thomas Jefferson
    The third president who bought the Louisiana Territory from France.
  94. Trail of Tears
    Forced movement of the Cherokee to IndianTerritory. Thousands died
  95. Segregation
    To seperate by races.
