  2. Describe Involution
    • -A return to non-pregnant state
    • -Fundal height decreases by 1 finger width per day
    • -Cramping
    • -Pains with breastfeeding for multiparas
  3. Define/describe Lochia
    • -lochia is the vaginal (after birth) discharge, containing blood, mucus, and placental tissue.
    • Progresses in 3 stages:
    • -Lochia rubra: bright/dark red, 1-3 days
    • -Lochia serosa: pink/brown 3-10 days
    • -Lochia alba: mucus, clr, or white, 10-21 days
  4. define Perineum & Episiotomy
    Perineum:a region of the body including the genitals and anus

    Episiotomy:a surgical incision on the perineum and the post. vaginal wall during second stage of labor used to to make the baby's birth easier and prevent vaginal tears

    • Assessment of perineal tissue
    • -Redness
    • -Edema
    • -Ecchymosis
    • -Discharge

    • Breast/nipples

    • HE: Homan's sign & Emotion
    • VT: VS & Thrombosis
  7. Describe changes in VS during postpartum
    • -Routine PostOp, every 4 hrs, then every 24 hrs
    • -report temp of 100.4 or above
    • -Bradycardia is normal (48 hrs)
    • -Tachycardia may indicate infection of hypovolemia
    • -pre-delivery BP or slightly decreased is normal due to progesterone vasodilation
  8. Describe changes to breasts/nipples during postpartum
    • -2-3 days soft/full
    • -3rd day firm/lumpy
    • -Engorgement may occur
    • -Supportive bra, no soap
    • -Non-nursing mom should avoid stimulation
    • -Assess: consistency, size, shape, symmetry, and nipples for redness, cracking, bleeding, inversion
  9. Identify 6 common postpartum medications
    • -Ibuprofen
    • -Vicodin/Norco
    • -Stool softeners (Colace/Senna)
    • -Methergine
    • -Pre-Natal vitamins

  11. Describe stage 4 - Recovery
    • -1st hr post delivery

    • -Assess every 15 minutes:
    • VS
    • Amt of vaginal bleeding/lochia
    • Fundus
    • Pain
  12. Define Fundus (uterus)
    The fundus of the uterus is the top portion, opposite from the cervix
