Sodium Bicarbonate

    Alkalinizing Agent (NaHCO3)
  2. Pharmacology and Action
    Raises the PH of blood plasma by buffering excess hydrogen ions. Provides vascular bicarbonate to assist the buffer system in reducing the effects of metabolic acidosis and in the treatment of some overdoses.
  3. Indications
    • - Prolong cardiac arrest
    • - Known kyperkalemia
    • - Tricyclic antidepressants / barbiturate OD
    • - Refractory acidosis
  4. Contraindications
    None in the emergency setting
  5. Precautions and Side Effects
    • - Extracelluar alkalosis
    • - Cardiac arrhythmias
    • - Decrease cerebral and cardiac functions
  6. Dosage (Adult and Pedi)
    1 mEq/kg IV or IO may repeat at half dose every 10 mins
