  1. List 5 Functions of the skin
    • 1) Protection - against bacteria, underlying tissue from injury & loss of body fluid
    • 2) Perception - Sense of touch, heat & cold, pain & pressure
    • 3) Temperature Control - body produces sweat to cool, heat regulator
    • 4) Absorption - moisture & medication
    • 5) Excretion- skin gets rid of water,salt, & waste
  2. How does the skin regulate body temperature ?
    • surface vessels dilate, allows heat to escape to cool off body,
    • Vessels constrict to reduce loss of heat ( retain heat)
  3. How does the body cool off?
    • Sweat Glands produce sweat,
    • Sweat evaporates from skin surface & then you cool off
  4. What are the three layers of skin?
    • a) subcutaneous - bottom layer, contains blood vessel, nerves & fat globules
    • b) dermis- middle layer, "true skin" contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat & oil glands
    • c) epidermis- top layer, ridges, appear on the soles of your feet

  7. What causes wrinkles?
    • the fatty underline tissue in the skin breaks down,
    • causing the skin to lose its elasticity,
    • causes excess of outer layer to develop wrinkles & folds
  8. Why does exposure to sun darken skin?
    • the melanin rises to the surface,
    • causing it to tan
  9. Why does the skin become red when you blush?
    • the blood vessels dilate,
    • blood vessels enlarge,
    • causes redness in the skin
  10. Macule
    colored spot, neither elevated nor depressed
  11. Papule
    solid, elevated circular red mass
  12. Pustule
    small circumscribed lesion, with exudate & lymph
  13. Vesicle
    blisterlike, elevated mass, containing serous fluid
  14. Wheal
    round lesion, white center, itches
  15. loss of hair usually on scalp

  16. raised wheal surrounded by reddened areas, itches
