    Senator of Wisconsin who produced a list of 57 State Department employees who were communists; claims were never proved; dramatic charges won him nation wide attention; brought about suspicion in the US of communists, and the Senate held televised hearings to investigate charges; appeared as a bully on television and was censured for conduct unbecoming of a senate member; lost all his power and died three years later
  6. Cause of Korean War
    After WW2, Korea was divided at 38th parallel; North was governed by communists and backed by the Soviet Union; South was governed by non-communists and was backed by the US; in 1950 Northern soldiers swept across border and into South Korea; President Truman quickly reacted and asked the Unites Nations to send armed forces to stop the invasion; they agreed and sent troops; MAIN CAUSE: NORTHERN SOLDIERS CROSSING BORDER

    In 1977 Egyptian president became first Arab head of state to visit Israel; visit led to a series of peace talks between the two nations; when talk s threatened to break down President Jimmy Carter stepped in; invited both leaders to Camp David, the President's retreat in Maryland; after 2 weeks, Israel agreed to return the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt; in return Egypt agreed to recognize the state of Israel; as a result of Camp David accords the two leaders signed a peace treaty in 1979
  8. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    Congress passed at President Johnson's urging; allowed President to take necessary measures to repel any armed attack or to prevent further aggression from the North Vietnamese; Johnson used resolution to order bombings of North Vietnam, as well as some targets in South Vietnam; as a result the role of Americans in Vietnam changed from military advisers to active fighters

    Slaughter of Europe's Jews by the Nazis; during war Nazis imprisoned Jews from Germany and nations they had conquered; in prison camps they tortured and murdered more then 6 million Jews; Nazis had used gas chambers to murder hundreds of thousands of Jews at the camps; Nazis also murdered other groups as well, including Poles, Slavs, and Gypsies; also killed prisoners of war and people they considered unfit because of physical or mental disabilities; all was done under the orders of Adolf Hitler
  10. U-2 Incident and Paris Peace Talks
    The 1960 U-2 incident occurred during the Cold War on May 1, 1960, during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower and during the leadership of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, when an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over Soviet Union. The United States government at first denied the plane's purpose and mission, but then was forced to admit its role as a covert surveillance aircraft when the Soviet government produced its remains (largely intact) and surviving pilot, Francis Gary Powers. Coming just over two weeks before the scheduled opening of an East–West summit in Paris, the incident was a great embarrassment to the United States and prompted a marked deterioration in its relations with the Soviet Union.
