NCTI- Pharmacology- Contraindications

  1. Acetylsalicylic Acid
    • Active gastrointestinal bleeding
    • Asthma patients with nasal polyps (anaphylaxis is common)
  2. Morphine Sulfate
    • Altered level of consciousness
    • Abdominal pain of unknown etiology
    • Respiratory depression
    • Head injury
    • Hypovolemia
  3. Activated Charcoal
    • Patients with a compromised airway – need to minimize chance for
    • aspiration or obstruction
    • Ingestion of Iron or multi-vitamins
    • Caustic acids/alkalis
    • Cyanide Poisoning
  4. Nitroglycerin
    • Blood pressure less than 100 mmHg systolic
    • Patients who have taken Erectile Dysfunction medications in the last 24-48 hours
    • Signs and symptoms of head trauma (increased intracranial pressure) or cerebral hemorrhage
    • Poor systemic perfusion
  5. Oxygen
    none
  6. Diazepam
    • Head injury/CNS Depression
    • Respiratory depression
    • Hypotension / depressed vital signs
    • Shock
    • Infants < 30 days old
  7. Midazolam
    • Acute narrow-angle glaucoma
    • Shock (from hypovolemia)
    • Hypotension (from hypovolemia)
    • Alcohol or drug intoxication
    • Allergies to cherries
  8. Naloxone
    None
  9. Glucagon
    not significant
  10. Dextrose 50% in water (D50W)
    • There are no absolute contraindications to the IV administration of dextrose in the emergency setting.
    • Relative contraindication: Use with caution in patients with increasing Intracranial pressure as the added glucose may worsen the cerebral edema.
