    a 1973 Supreme Court decision that made it unconstitutional for state laws to prohibit abortions

    a medical/ethical position that holds that performing an abortion is an act of murder
  7. pro-choice
    a medical/ethical position that holds that women have a right to reproductive freedom
  8. prenatal health care
    medical care provided to a pregnant woman from the time of conception until the birth process occurs
  9. low-birth-weight infant
    one that weighs less than 2,500 grams or 5.5 pounds, at birth
  10. fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)
    a group of abnormalities that may include growth retardation, abnormal appearance of face and head, and deficits of central nervous system function, including mental retardation, in babies born to mothers who consumed heavy amounts of alcohol during their pregnancies
  11. sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
    sudden unanticipated death of an infant in whom, after examination, there is no recognized cause of death
  12. WIC
    a special supplemental food program for women, infants, and children, sponsored by the USDA
  13. Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
    federal law that provides up to 12-week unpaid leave to men and women after the birth of a child, an adoption, or an event of illness in the immediate family
