Biology Lab #4

  1. What is Brownian Movement
Movement of the molecules is random; they bump into one another and bounce off in a different direction.
  2. Diffusion
Random movement of molecules from areas of high to areas of low concentration.
  3. Osmosis
Is a special case of diffusion.  It occurs when there are two solutions of different concentrations on opposite sides of a semi-permeable membrane.
  4. Solvent Water
    Can cross the membranes freely
  5. Solute
    Cannot cross the membranes freely
  6. Tonicity
Describes one solution's solute concentration compared to that of another.
  7. Hyprotonic
The solution on one side of the membrane contains a greater concentration of a solute compared to the other side of the membrane.
  8. Isotonic
Equal amounts of the solute are found on each side of the membrane.
  9. Hypotonic
The solution on one side of the membrane contains a lower concentration of a solute compared to the other side
