Physiology of Respiration 2/11/13

  1. TV
Tidal Volume: The volume of air exchanged in one cycle of respiration.
  2. IRV
Inspiratory Reserve Volume: The volume of air that can be inhaled after a tidal inspiration.
  3. ERV
Expiratory Reserve Volume: The volume of air that can be expired after a tidal expiration.
  4. RV
Residual Volume: The volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximum exhalation.
  5. Dead Air
The volume of air within the conducting passageways that can't be involved in gas exchange (included as a component of residual volume).
  6. VC
Vital Capacity: The volume of air that can be inhaled following a maximal exhalation. It represents the capacity available for speech. (IRV + ERV + TV = VC).
  7. FRC
Functional Reserve Capacity: The volume of air remaining in the body after a passive exhalation. (ERV + RV = FRC)
  8. TLC
Total Lung Capacity: The volume of air that is involved in a maximal respiratory cycle. (TV + IRV + ERV + RV = TLC).
  9. IC
Inspiratory Capacity: The maximum inspiratory volume of air that is possible after tidal expiration. (TV + IRV)
