- Catalase is a bacterial enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide
- Positive = Bubbling
- Negative = No Bubbling
- Differentiate Staph and Strep
Slide Coagulase Test
- Detects Clumping Factor (bound coagulase attached to the bacteria)
- Positive = Visible clumping of latex
- Negative = No clumping
Tube Coagulase Test
- Coagulase is a bacterial enzyme that clots plasma
- Inoculate bacterial paste to rabbit plasma
- Incubate 4 hrs at 35C
- Positive = clotting
- Negative = No clotting
- A back-up or confirmation test to the faster slide coagulase
Novobiocin Resistance Test
- Antibiotic susceptibility test used to differentiate Staphylococcus epidermis from Staphylococcus saprophyticus
- -"Carpet streak" BA w/ inoculum
- -Place C-disk on agar surface
- -Incubate 24hrs at 35C
- Susceptible > 16mm
- Resistant < 16mm
