    single-celled prokaryotes, are very divers, and can be catigorized into 3 basic shapes
  2. MRSA
    methicilin-resistance staphylococcus aureus
  3. Viruses
    consist of nulceic  acid surround by a protein sheath or coat, and are not classified as living organisms 
  4. Prions
    a misfolded protein
  5. First Line
    barriers: skin, mucous membranes
  6. Second Line
    • non-specific patrol "untrained soldiers"
    • white blood cells, inflammation, fever
  7. White Blood Cells
    • macrophages and phagocytes
    • engulf and digest invasive organisms¬†
  8. Third Line
    • "elite trained soldiers"
    • lymphocytes, antibodies, B and T cells
  9. Antigens
    the recognized foreign protien
  10. Antibodies
    bind to antigens and target a foreign cell for destruction
  11. B cells
    • recognize small organisms, such as bacteria
    • produce antibodies
  12. T cells
    • respond to large organisms
    • attack antigen directly
  13. Passive Immunity
    short term immunity, lasts as long as antibodies are in blood stream (mother to fetus)
  14. Active Immunity
    • long term cause by exposure to antigen and production of B and T cells (memory cells)
    • NOTE: either can be natural (like mother to fetus) or artificial (like a vaccine)
  15. Humoral Immunity
    • 1. b cells produce specific antibodies
    • 2. a clonal copy of that cell provides long term immunity (memory b cells)
  16. Memory T Cells
    recognize the antigen
  17. Cytotoxic (killer) T cells
    attack the antigen containing cell or virus
  18. Helper T Cells
    release substances that recruit more immune cells, increasing the immune response
  19. Vaccinations
    attempt to take advantage of long term immunity through exposure to parts of antigens
