Network Definitions (Chapter 2)

  1. MAC-Media Access Control
    It remembers the NIC's own MAC address and attaches MAC addresses to the frames.  The MAC also ensures that the frames, now complete with their MAC addresses, are then sent along the network cabling.
  2. MIME-Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions
    A standard for attaching binary files, such as executables and images, to the Internet's text-based mail (24-Kbps packet size)
  3. Logical Link Control
    The aspect of the NIC that talks to the operating system, places data coming from the software into frames, and creates the FCS on each frame.  The LLC also deals with incoming frames-processing those that are addressed to this NIC and erasing frames addressed to other machines on the network.

  5. Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC)
    A mathematical method that is used to check for errors in long streams of transmitted data with high accuracy.  Before data is sent, the main computer uses the data to calculate a CRC value from the data's contents.  If the receiver calculates a different CRC from the received data, the data was corrupted during transmission and is re-sent.  Ethernet frames have a CRC code.
  6. Frame Check Sequence (FCS)
    A sequence of bits placed in a frame that is used to check the primary data for errors.
  7. device ID
    Represents the NIC's last 6 digits, manufacturer's unique serial number.
  8. organizationally unique identifier (OUI)
    First 6 numbers of the NIC manufacturer
  9. IEEE
    Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
  10. MAC-media access control address
    Inside every NIC, burned onto some type of ROM chip, is special firmware containing a unique identifier with a 48-bit value called the media access control address, or MAC address.Meyers, Michael (2012-01-09).
