  1. State 4 types of info, that descibe a sensory stimulus and use examples to describe how they're encoded by sensory systems (Lecture 29) :
Sensory stimulus: touch, pressure, temperature, body position (proprioception) & similar perceptions that do not require complex sensory organs.

Explanation: Crude touch and pressure sensations are functions of the spinothalamic pathway. Knowing that something touches the skin is a crude touch sensation, whereas knowing its precise location, size, shape, or texture involves the discriminating touch sensations of the medial lemniscal system.
  2. Define somatic sensation & special senses: (29)
Somatic sensations:touch, pressure, temperature, body position (proprioception)

txtbook:Various areas of the cerebral cortex are essential for normal functioning of the somatic, or “general,” senses, as well as the so-called “special” senses. The somatic senses include sensations of touch, pressure, temperature, body position (proprioception), and similar perceptions that do not require complex sensory organs. The special senses include vision, hearing, and other types of perception that require complex sensory organs, for example, the eye and the ear
  3. Briefly describe specific structures that enable sensations of touch, changes in muscle length, & pain (29):
  4. Describe two major somatosensory pathways (29):
    • By somatic SENSORY pathways (2 types)-
    • 1) Medial lemniscus system - touch and kinesthesia
    • 2) Spinothalamic Pathway- conducts info. about pain and temperature.
  5. Describe the primary somatosensory cortex (29):
  6. C&C : reflex & voluntary movements (30)
  7. Draw a functional diagram od stretch reflex (30):
  8. Describe primary motor cortex & premotor cortex (30):
  9. List major steps leading to voluntary movement (30):
  10. Briefly describe roles of basal nuclei & cerebellum in VOLUNTARY movement (30)
  11. C&C: symapathetic & parasympathetic inervation of target tissues (31)
  12. C&C: the way autonomic & somatic sensory nervous systems innervate target tissue:
