Unit 4 Bio

  1. EVOLUTION
The change in heritable traits in a population over generations
  2. GENE POOL
The total collection of genes in a population at any one time
  3. POPULATION
Group of individuals (same as species) living in the samae place at the same time
  4. MICROEVOLUTION
A change in the relative frequencies of alleles in gene pool over time.
  5. MUTATION
    • -Changes in the nucleotide sequence
    • - The ultimate source of new alleles
  6. Discrete Characteristics
determined by different alleles at single locus
  7. QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERS
    • Vary along a continum within a population
    • determined by action of two or more genes at different loci
  8. FOR POPULATION TO REMAIN IN HARDY-WEINBURG EQ it must have what 5 characteristics
    • Very Large population
    • No gene flow between populations
    • No Mutations
    • Random Mating
    • No Natural Selection
  9. NATURAL SELECTION
change in allele frequencies because certain alleles confer higher relative fitness
  10. GENETIC DRIFT
change in allele frequencies due to chance occurrence in small populations
  11. GENE FLOW
change in allele frequencies due to mixing of genes between populations
