Block II: Fluid & Electrolytes and GI Iggy chapters: 13, 14, 15, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60, and 62

  1. What are the two major fluid compartments, in the body?
    • 1. Intracellular fluid (ICF): Contains approximately 30 liters and accounts for 40% of our body weight.
    • 2. Extracellular fluid (ECF): Contains approximately 12 liters and accounts for 20% of our body weight.
  2. What three areas are included in the Extracellular fluid compartment?
    • 1. Intravascular (plasma): Contains approximately 8 liters of the total 12 in extracellular fluid.
    • 2. Interstitial (tissue): Contains approximately 3 liters of the total 12 in extracellular fluid.
    • 3. Transcellular (specialized cavities like cerebral spinal fluid, etc.): Contains approximately 1 liter of the total 12 in extracellular fluid.
  3. Water accounts for what percentage of body mass in each of the following?
    a. Adults
    b. Children
    c. Elders
    • a. Adults: Body mass = 50 - 60%
    • b. Children: Body mass = 70 - 80%
    • c. Elders: Body mass = 45 - 55%

NOTE: Based on these amounts, children and elders are affected the most, when there is a fluid loss.
  4. 1 liter of H2O = ?
    2.2 lbs or 1 kg
  5. Define: Electrolytes
    • Substances whose molecules dissociate into ions (charged particles) when placed into water.
    • Cations: positively charged
    • Anions: negatively charged

    • NOTE:
    • 1. ICF:
    • a) Prevalent cation is k+
    • b) Prevalent anion is PO43-
    • 2. ECF:
    • a) Prevalent cation is Na+
    • b) Prevalent anion is Cl-
  6. In regard to the Elderly what should we ensure, when it comes to water?
That we ALWAYS offer water and that it is within their reach.
  7. Ultimately dehydration can be the result of what two things?
    • 1. Loss of fluid
    • 2. Increased sodium
  8. What is homeostasis?
    • 1. State of equilibrium in the body
    • 2. Naturally maintained by adaptive responses
    • 3. Body fluids and electrolytes are maintained within narrow limits
