Yr 8 Respiration

  1. What is respiration?
Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens in all living cells. It is the way that energy is released from glucose, for our cells to use to keep us functioning.
  2. What two substances are needed for respiration?
    Glucose and Oxygen.
  3. What products are produced by respiration?
    Water and carbon dioxide.
  4. What is the equation for aerobic respiration.
glucose + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water
  5. What is glucose and where do we obtain this from?
Glucose is a type of carbohydrate, obtained through digestion of the food we eat.
  6. In what part of the lung does gas exchange take place? (Taking oxygen from the air and removing carbon dioxide from the blood).
    Alveoli
  7. Describe some features of the alveoli that allow diffusion to take place easily.
    • They give the lungs a really big surface area
    • They have moist, thin walls (just one cell thick)
    • They have a lot of tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
  8. What are tiny blood vessels called?
    Capillaries.
  9. What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration.
  10. How is glucose transported around the body?
It is dissolved in blood plasma, the pale yellow liquid part of our blood.
  11. How is oxygen transported around the body?
They are carried by the red blood cells attached to haemoglobin.
  12. How is carbon dioxide transported around the body?
It is dissolved in blood plasma, the pale yellow part of our blood.
  13. What is breathing or ventilation?
The movements of the ribs, rib muscles and diaphragm allowing air into and out of the lungs.
  14. What is the tube called that connects the lungs to the outside of the body?
    Trachea or windpipe
  15. What parts of the body does oxygen from the air have to pass through to reach the blood?
    Trachea, bronchus, bronchiole, alveoli
  16. What parts of the body does carbon dioxide have to pass through to get outside the body?
blood stream, alveoli, bronchiole, bronchus, trachea
