edema and inflammation of the rectum that may progress to entire colon

inflammation and ulceration of GI tract

can involve entire tract (mouth to anus)

sporadic lesions

all layers of bowel involved

foods high in protien and calories, low in fiber

avoid caffeine and alcohol

advise for small frequent meals

monitor electrolytes (esp. K r/t diahrrea) and dehydration

reduce the hypermotility in the gut -- promotes reduced intestinal peristalsis
