Occurs when waves bend around an object.
Diffraction
Two waves join to form a resultant of a wave of lower amplitude.
Destructive Interference
A change in direction that a wave experiences when it bounces off of a barrier between two mediums.
Reflection
Bottom of a transverse wave
Trough
Waves that have the same direction of vibration as their direction of travel.
Compressional Waves
Waves that do not require a medium to pass through.
Electromagnetic Waves
The change in direction & change in velocity that a wave experiences when it leaves one medium and goes into another.
Refraction
The part of a compressional wave when the particles are spread apart.
Rarefaction
Two waves join to form a wave of greater or lower amplitude.
Interference
A great sea wave produced especially by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption.
Tsunami
The height of a waves crest.
Amplitude
Two waves join to form a result of a wave of greater amplitude.
Constructive Interference
Waves that require a medium to pass through.
Mechanical Wave
Number of crests or troughs of a wave that pass a given point in a specified period of time, usually 1s.
Frequency
The distance between successive crests of a wave.
Wavelength
The speed in which waves travel.
Wave speed
The top of a transverse wave.
Crest
A wave where the vibrating element moves in a direction perpendicular to the direction of a wave.
Transverse
A material waves can pass through.
Medium
A rhythmic disturbance that carries energy and matter.
