- Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes(1st line)
- can cause weight loss for overweight diabetics
What can metaformin(Glucophage) be used in conjunction with
- sulfonylureas
- thiazolidinediones
- insulin
Contraindications of metaformin(Glucophage)
- renal disease/dysfunction(primarily excreted through kidneys)
- alcoholism
- metabolic acidosis
- hepatic disease
- HF
- cardiopulmonary disease
Adverse side effects of metaformin(Glucophage)
- abd bloating
- nausea
- cramping
- full feeling
- diarrhea
- metallic taste
- low B12 levels
- lactic acidosis
Interactions with metaformin(Glucophage)

iodine contrast medium(renal failure/lactic acidosis), stop 48 hrs before radiologic studies
Route and dose for metaformin(Glucophage)
- PO 1000mg or 850 mg bid
- max: adult-2550 mg, peds- 2000mg

- Cimetidine
- Iodine containing contrast
