Types of Bone Fracture

  1. Bone does not penetrate the skin
    Simple
  2. Break occurs at right angle to the shaft of the bone
    Transverse
  3. Any fracture not at a right angle to the bone
    Oblique
  4. A twisting fracture
    Spiral
  5. The edge of the bone fragments penetrates and protrudes from the skin
    Compound
  6. The bone is broken, but not all the way through the bone
    Partial
  7. A partial break results in bending of the bone
    Greenstick
  8. A partial break occurs down the length of the bone
    Fissure
  9. The bone breaks into several fragments
    Comminuted
  10. Only one fragment of the bone breaks off
    Segmental
  11. The ends of the bones are wedged into each other
    Impacted
  12. Fractures that result from crushing forces on the vertebrae
    Compression
