  1. cardiovascular disease
    a collective term for various diseases of the heart and blood vessels.
  2. platelets
    cell fragments that allow blood clots
  3. hypertension
    sustained abnormally high blood pressure
  4. atherosclerosis
    a form of CVD in which the inner layers fo artery walls are made thick and irregular by plaque deposits; arteries become narrowed, and blood supply is reduced.
  5. lipoproteins
    low density protein-and-lipid substances in the blood that rary fats and cholesterol; classified acccording to sizze, density, an chemical composition.
  6. low-density proteins
    a lipoprotien containing a moderate amount of protein and a large amt of cholesterol; bad choleterol
  7. high density lipoprotein 
    a lipoprotein containing relatively little cholesterol that helps transport cholesterol out of the arteries; good cholesterol
  8. plaque
    a deposit of fatty (and other) substances on the inner wall of an artery
  9. coronary heart disease
    heart disease caused by atherosclerosis in the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle; also called coronary artery disease.
  10. heart attack
    damage to, or death of heart muscle, resulting from a failure of the coronary ateries to deliver enough blood to the heart
  11. angina pectoris
    a condition in which the heart muscle does not recieve enough blood, causing severe pain in the chest and often in the arm and sholder.
  12. arrhythmia
    a change in the normal pattern of the heartbeat
  13. sudden cardiac death
    • a nontrauma, unexpected death from sudden cardiac arrest, most often due to arrhythmia
    • in most instances, victims have underlying heart disease
  14. stroke
    when blood supply to some part of the brain is cut off. resulting in the destruction of brain cells
  15. cancer
    abnormal, uncontrolled multiplication of cells
  16. tumor
    a mass of tissue that serves no physiological purpose; also called a neoplasm
  17. benign tumor
    a tumor that is not cancerous
  18. malignant tumor
    a tumor that is cancerous and capable of spreading
  19. lymphatic system
    a sys of vessels that returns protiens, lipids, and other substances from fluid in the tissues to teh circulatory system.
  20. metastiasis
    the spread of cancer cells from one part of the body to another.
  21. carcinogen
    any substance that causes cancer
  22. chemotherapy
    the treatment of cancer with cancer with chemicals that selectively destroy cancerous cells
  23. cirrhosis
    a disease in which the liver is everely damaged by alcohol, other toxins, or infection
  24. environmental smoke
    secondhand smoke
  25. mainstremam smoke
    smoke inhaled by smoker and exhaled into the atmosphere
  26. sidestream smoke
    smoke from the burning end of a cigarette
