Ch. 2 Neuroscience

  1. axons
sends signals...passes message along to other neurons or to muscles or glands
  2. dendrites
recieves messages..the neurons bushy, branching extentions the recieve messages and conduct impulses toward the cell body
  3. synapses
the junction between the axon tip of the sending neuron and the dendrite or cel lbody of the recieving neurons. the tiny gap at this junction is called the synaptic gap..meeting point between neurons
  4. neurotransmitters
chemical messengers that cross the synaptic gaps between neurons when released by the sending neurons. neurotransmitters travel along the synapse and bind to the receptor siters on the recieving neuron, thereby influencing whether the neuron will generate a neural response
  5. neurotransmitters and disorders
    too much dopamine: schizophrenia

    too little seratonin: depression
  6. sympathetic nervous system
    arouses and expends energy
  7. parasympthaetic nervous system
    conserves energy and calms
