Mass spectrometry

The flashcards below were created by user algebrageek on FreezingBlue Flashcards.

  1. Ionisation
    • Electron gun fires high enery electrons
    • Hit atoms, knock off electrons
    • Form positive ions
    • Very few have two electrons knocked off (2+ ions)
  2. Acceleration
    • Negative plates with small gap
    • Attract ions, so they accelerate
    • Most hit plates- back to atoms
    • Others form narrow beam of positive ions
  3. Deflection
    • Electromagnet- change strength
    • Deflects ions (bends beam)
    • Lighter ions deflected further than heavier ions
  4. Detection
    • Ion hits plate
    • Positive charge creates smal pulse of electrical current
    • Larger current means higher abudance
    • Same mass is same point on plate
